The OECD Development Centre highlights the central role of discriminatory social norms in perpetuating gender inequalities in non-OECD countries. Work includes looking at the underlying causes of gender inequality through the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) and engaging in a dialogue through the platform Wikigender. The Development Centre produces research linking social norms with a range of development outcomes on a regular basis as well as new research, such as migration and time use.

Sharing knowledge and data

The SIGI is a cross-country measure of discriminatory social institutions, covering 180 countries. Browse the Gender, Institutions and Development Database (GID-DB) and explore the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) to find out more about how the underlying drivers of gender inequality shape women’s empowerment opportunities as well as national development outcomes.

SIGI Regional Reports dive deeper into regional progress towards gender equality and analyses the impacts of remaining challenges for regional development goals. Read the Eurasia and the sub-Saharan Africa Reports.

With the SIGI Policy Simulator policy makers can test reform options and assess their likely effects on gender equality in social institutions. Find out more on the SIGI Country Studies.

Wikigender is an online platform for gender and development advocates and experts to share and exchange knowledge and data. The re-launched website is now available in English, French and Spanish.
